New Jersey DJ finds success despite hearing loss

New Jersey DJ finds success despite hearing loss

New Jersey DJ Robbie Wilde had been successful at his craft over the years. According to Fox affiliate WNYW, the 26-year-old often packs up his gig bag and plays in clubs across the country. This does not seem all that impressive until you consider this: he's almost completely deaf.

Wilde was left significantly hearing impaired after bad ear infections in his childhood. He is completely deaf in his right year and about 80 percent deaf in his left. Still, by using muscle memory, smart counting and his limited hearing ability, he has been able to create some popular mixes. It certainly has not been easy, but Wilde was committed to fine-tuning his craft.

"It's not realistic for someone who is hearing impaired and deaf to be as skillful or have the level of talent up there," he told the news channel.  "I just challenged myself to do it."

Wilde is not the only person helping challenge previously-held notions about DJs. Just recently an 11-year-old performer in the UK broke the record for mixing the most songs in sixty seconds – all with a broken hand, according to The Sun.

Electric Daisy Carnival announces stacked lineup

Electric Daisy Carnival announces stacked lineup

The Electric Daisy Carnival is set to hit Las Vegas once again this year, and organizers attracted a pretty impressive lineup of performers. Tiesto, Afrojack and Avicii are just three of the many talented acts slated to unpack their tour cases and hit the stage this year, MTV News reports.

The festival is going to kick off at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on June 8, and is expected to draw a huge crowd. Last year, around 240,000 concert goers showed up, and event planners believe that number could reach as many as 300,000. It's not hard to see why the festival is so popular. In addition to concerts, the event is true to its name and offers a complete carnival atmosphere that goes beyond music.

"It's about the whole experience," founder Pasquale Rotella told MTV News on Wednesday. "We are not a concert. We are so much more than that – it's about the production, it's about the art. The music being played is the soundtrack to your experience for the evening."

Joining Tiesto, Afrojack and Avicii will be Swedish House Mafia's Sebastian Ingrosso, Calvin Harris and David Guetta, to name a few.

UK festival boom may be over, rapper says

UK festival boom may be over, rapper says

Music festivals have become huge in the United Kingdom and the United States, but while fans still turn out in droves to watch the biggest names in electronic dance music unpack their tour cases, some think that could soon change. Speaking to BBC's Newsbeat, British rapper Example believes the run could soon be over.

He's certainly got it on good authority. Example performed at more festivals in the UK during the summer of 2011 than any other act. He estimates he played at either 25 or 26 such events. Although many were well-organized, that wasn't the case with all of them, which he believes could cause a downward trend.

"Some of them had a great theme, a great location and great line-up and the people running them knew what they were doing," he told the news source. "And there were other ones which seemed to me were really amateur."

If the festival scene is on the decline in the UK, it is on the rise across the pond. In the U.S., last month's Ultra Music Festival was a huge hit and attracted as many as 200,000 spectators. Furthermore, the Electric Daisy Carnival will make its way to New York for the first time ever later this year.

Diplo to debut radio show

Diplo is one of the most in-demand DJs in the world, but the producer will be putting down his mixer case for a little while and instead be stepping into the radio booth. Diplo recently signed on to do a weekly show on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra, Pitchfork reports.

The show will be called "Diplo and Friends" and is slated to occupy the time slot between 1 and 3 a.m. on Saturday nights into Sunday morning. The program is expected to cover a wide range of topics and will also feature music from popular and up-and-coming artists as well as Diplo himself. The first show is set for April 7, and according to the post on the his label's website, it should be an impressive debut.

"This weekend we're kicking it off with one hour each from Montreal's king of swag, Lunice, and Mad Decent mastermind Paul Devro," the blog announced.

The radio show is just one of Diplo's many projects lately. The American DJ worked on Usher's upcoming album, and is also teaming up with Snoop Dogg to work on the rap legend's latest project.

Skrillex was asked to perform at Grammys

Skrillex was asked to perform at Grammys

Electronic dance music got its first ever showcase at this year's Grammy Awards, but Skrillex, one of the biggest names in the genre, was not present for it. While it may have originally seemed like a snub, the California native DJ recently told Pitchfork in an interview that it was his decision not to do the performance.

The performance brought together big names in EDM like David Guetta, Chris Brown and Deadmau5, but it also featured a contribution from Foo Fighters. Although Skrillex was asked to be included as well, he felt it wasn't the right choice.

"And, all due respect to all those artists, but that's not what I do," he told the publication. "I don't play on TV. My performances are different because you're captivated more by everything around you rather than just staring at something. And I try to cater to the venue."

Skrillex also discussed whether or not he'd put away the tour cases and release a full-length album. Up until now, he's only put out wildly popular mixtapes and EPs, one of which, Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites, even went on to win a Grammy.

Pioneer comes home with Manufacturer of the Year honors

The 2012 Winter Music Conference was meant to showcase some of the best talents in the industry, but it also highlighted manufacturers, and when it came to DJ equipment one stood above the rest. Pioneer Electronics came home with five awards including Manufacturer of the Year.

The accolades should not come as much of a surprise given that many performers have the brand's equipment in a Pioneer case. Perhaps most impressive, the company won Best New Product for the DDJ-T1 DJ Controller. Its most attractive function is that, when connected to a computer, the controller gives even novice performers all the capabilities of a professional at a mixing board.

"We want to continue to bring the most innovative and technologically advanced products to market so DJs around the world, from aspiring DJs to professionals and everyone in between, can perform to their utmost potential," said David Arevalo, senior marketing manager, professional sound and visual division for Pioneer.

Pioneer won several other awards to go along with Best New Product and Manufacturer of the Year. It also earned recognition for Best Headphones, Best Mixer and Best CD Player.

Youngster sets DJ world record

Despite having a broken hand and being just 11 years old, pint-sized DJ Jack Hill recently unpacked his gig bag and set a world record. The Somerset, England, native mixed 10 songs in just a minute, making him the youngest performer to ever accomplish the feat, the Daily Mail reports.

Setting records is nothing new for Hill. This is the fifth time he's managed to accomplish something nobody else has, and it's no surprise either. Hill is already an experienced DJ – he's been spinning since he was just 3 years old. Although he is small in stature, Hill did not let the gravity of the situation affect him.

"I wasn't nervous because the mix is quite difficult and you only have six seconds per song to cue sync and mix, so I didn't even have time to get nervous," he told the newspaper.

Hill already has a budding DJ career. He has a regular Saturday night gig, and the other records to his credit including the official Guinness World Record for being the youngest club DJ.

There are a number of young DJs coming up through the ranks. Among them is Connor Cruise, the 17-year-old son of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, who has a burgeoning DJ career of his own.

LCD Soundsystem documentary to hit more theaters this summer

LCD Soundsystem documentary to hit more theaters this summer

"Shut UP and Play the Hits," the emotional documentary chronicling LCD Soundsystem's last show, wowed audiences at this year's Sundance Film Festival, and it looks like the general public will soon get a chance to see it as well. Oscilloscope Laboratories announced it has obtained the rights to distribute the film across North America.

The announcement was made on a pretty significant date. April 2 marks the one-year anniversary of the the last time James Murphy and LCD Soundsystem unloaded their gig bag for a show. That nearly four-hour show and the 48 hours before it is the centerpiece of the documentary.

The decision to give the documentary a widespread release was made in part by Adam Yauch, a member of the Beastie Boys and head of Oscilloscope. He said that it's important for fans to understand the nuances of being in a band.

In particular, he said that "his film addresses so many questions. For instance, it can be pretty clear when a band starts, but perhaps less so when it ends, or how it should end."

There are still some details to be released, but the film will hit theaters in special one-night engagements this summer.

Pauly D transitions from reality star to pro DJ

Paul Delvecchio, better known as DJ Pauly D, is most famous for his role on MTV's Jersey Shore, but he's ready to enter a new part of his career. The budding musician, who recently signed a record deal with 50 Cent, is gearing up for his DJing take to center stage, Rolling Stone reports.

Although he will still be appearing on MTV, this time it will be on a reality show chronicling his work behind the DJ laptop at Palms Hotel in Las Vegas. Instead of focusing primarily on debauchery with his housemates, instead he's got his mind set on his upcoming album, which 50 Cent helped him work on.

"The second I heard it was him, I went to him first and I signed with him immediately," Pauly D told the publication. "He sees exactly what I see in the album."

Pauly D is one of many stars who are turning to DJing as an alternate path. Former child star Taylor Momsen, who has burgeoning music career with her band The Pretty Reckless, is also booking DJ gigs, according to the New York Daily News.

Study finds Brits spend a lot to go out

Study finds Brits spend a lot to go out

Results of a recent survey conducted by Smirnoff should make DJs in the United Kingdom very happy. The British-owned vodka company found that people in Great Britain spend as much as £27,000 ($43,100) going to clubs during their lifetime, Mixmag.net reports.

Researchers aimed to examine the nightlife habits of people between the ages of 18 and 40, and it looks like many of them enjoy watching the world's best spinner unpack their gig bag and get to work. An average night out in the UK came to about £50 ($79), and a surprising amount of people (around 20 percent) wouldn't mind dropping £175 ($279) on a single night.

The study also found some interesting information about certain cities. In particular, while Bristol may be home to people willing to spend the least, it was also home to those who wanted to go out the most.

"When you think about door entry, ticket prices, taxis or tube fares and a few drinks we aren’t surprised that £50 is the average," electronic duo Chase & Status, who worked with Smirnoff, said about the study.

With clubbing being as popular as it is in the UK, it's no wonder that Avicii recently announced two huge shows at London's and Dublin's 02 Arena.
